How the exams differ
The papers are the same: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The difference is in how hard the texts are, in the length and in what is expected of you.
- In C1 Advanced the texts are longer and more abstract, and the tasks ask you to understand attitude, tone and what is not said directly.
- In Writing, B2 First asks for a clear and well-organised text. C1 Advanced also asks for a suitable style and a convincing argument.
- In Speaking, C1 Advanced expects you to discuss, not only to answer.
How to decide
- Applying to a university abroad? Look at the course requirements. Some programmes ask for C1.
- At secondary school and want a certificate alongside the matura? B2 First is at the same level as the higher level of the matura, the Croatian state school-leaving exam (državna matura).
- Not sure whether you are at B2 or C1? Check your level. A result of B2+ means C1 Advanced is within reach with preparation.
- Have a deadline and cannot afford a mistake? The exam at the level you are already at is the safer one.
The scales overlap. With grade A in B2 First (a score of 180 to 190) the certificate confirms level C1. But an institution that asks for “C1 Advanced” may want that exam and no other, so read the requirement carefully.
What if I do not pass C1 Advanced?
With a score of 160 to 179 you get a certificate at level B2. Below that you get only a Statement of Results. You can take the exam again at the next session.
