Questions and answers
Choosing an exam
Which Cambridge exam is right for me?
The one at the level you are at now, or the level you can reach by the exam date. Check your level with the free test. All eight exams are set out on the Exams page.
What do the abbreviations FCE, CAE, CPE, KET and PET mean?
They are the old names of the exams. FCE is now B2 First, CAE is C1 Advanced, CPE is C2 Proficiency, KET is A2 Key and PET is B1 Preliminary. The exams and certificates are the same; only the name has changed.
What does “for Schools” mean?
A2 Key, B1 Preliminary and B2 First also come in a for Schools version. The level and format are the same, and the topics are suited to school pupils. The certificate confirms the same level.
Cambridge or IELTS?
You take a Cambridge exam at one level, and the certificate does not expire. IELTS measures all levels with one test, and some universities and immigration procedures ask for it. More in the guide Cambridge or IELTS.
Applying and paying
Where can I take Cambridge exams in Croatia?
At exam centre HR015, run by Jantar – International House Split. We hold exams in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Čakovec and Vinkovci. Dates and fees.
How do I apply?
Choose a session and fill in the application form. We e-mail you the payment details, and the application is confirmed when the payment arrives. For learners at preparation centres, their school usually applies for them.
How much do the exams cost?
Pre A1 Starters €79, A1 Movers €89, A2 Flyers €89, A2 Key €119, B1 Preliminary €129, B2 First €229, C1 Advanced €239, C2 Proficiency €249.
Can I cancel or move my exam?
Not after you have paid. The exception is sudden illness: with medical documentation, sent no later than seven days after the exam, you can ask for your payment to be transferred to the next session. The details are in the rules.
I need special arrangements. Who do I contact?
Contact us, at least five days before the closing date for applications, at cambridge.ispiti@jantar.hr. We will send you a request form, to which you attach medical documentation that is no more than two years old.
The exam
What do I need to bring to the exam?
A valid identity card or passport and your Confirmation of Entry. Arrive 20 minutes before the start. More in the guide Exam day.
Is the exam on a computer or on paper?
The format is shown with each session. We also run the exams from A2 Key to C2 Proficiency as digital exams: you then take them on a computer at the exam centre. The Speaking test is always face to face, with examiners.
What is the Speaking test like?
From A2 Key to C2 Proficiency you speak in a pair with another candidate, in front of two examiners, for 8 to 16 minutes, depending on the exam. In the exams for children, the child talks one to one with the examiner.
Results and certificate
When do results arrive?
For a digital exam in 5 to 10 working days, for a paper-based exam usually in 4 to 6 weeks. How to see your result.
How long is the certificate valid?
It does not expire. Individual institutions decide for themselves how old a result they accept.
Who recognises Cambridge certificates?
Cambridge states that its exams are accepted by more than 25,000 organisations in 130 countries. To look up a particular institution, use Cambridge's search tool.
Preparation
How do I prepare?
At a language school in your town, on our short course in Zagreb, or on your own with sample tests. The Preparation page describes all three.
Do I have to take a course to sit the exam?
No. Anyone can apply for an exam. For C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency we do still recommend preparation.
How does a school become a preparation centre?
Contact us through the page For language schools or For state schools.
